Ultra HD 4K Security Cameras

When it comes to the advantages and disadvantages of Ultra HD security cameras many arguments can be made. The reality is what can you get for your MONEY? The advantage is obvious - enhanced resolution and more details. But this can only be valid if the optics are of matching quality.

The image sensor is the main element that will determine how clearly the image is displayed.

The 4K security cameras can only offer 20MP images, not video. Simply because the image sensor is not large enough to handle so many pixels in video motion, the images will blur together.

4K security cameras offer 20 MP over a 1 inch image sensor. This is a relatively large image sensor when compared to other models. However, this is equivalent to 2 times more pixels crammed into the image sensor as the Mobotix specs. As a result the 4K’s low light performance will be 2x lower and the video streaming has half the capacity. Further, they use a vary-focal lens, which again reduces the light exposure. The streaming bandwidth needed to process the images will be more than 3x larger. Which means you will need a serious computer to process the images if you would like a similar “frame by frame” result.

Mobotix uses an oversized image sensor to capture the optimal amount of light and uses its own codec MxPEG (encoding and decoding of images). Therefore, the image is not compressed (un-tampered) unlike H264 and is valid evidence in a court of law. As a security camera itself the 4K models are impressive, however, the computing power needed to view the cameras is not so impressive.
